Propranolol is a beta blocker which works by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine, also known as adrenaline. It does not affect any hormone production in your body but only block the effect of one hormone, adrenaline.

Propranolol is most often used for blocking chemicals in your body from increasing your heart rate - by blocking those chemicals, it has the opposite effect (it lowers your heart rate). It can also help with some forms of stress and blood pressure by controlling the heart rate. While it does affect some chemicals (like adrenaline), it does not affect all chemicals/hormones in the body.
