Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease that causes a painless sore on the genitals about 3 weeks after exposure. The sore lasts 4-6 weeks and is highly contagious during this time. If caught early, Syphilis can be treated completely. If the sore is not noticed/hidden such as in the rectum, and not treated, the sore may initially clear, but the virus remains dormant in nerve cells for decades
