Burned plastic is obnoxious and smells terrible. However one exposure of the sort you describe is not going to cause cancer or even risk it. You will have a mess to clean up on the stove however.

A single exposure to burnt plastic will not change your baseline risk. You can reduce your risk of cancer by adopting healthy habits: Eat a mostly vegetarian diet, avoid alcohol, tobacco and street drugs, avoid excessive to sun, get HPV vaccine, exercise 30 minutes each day, drink enough water so your urine is mostly colorless. Wish you good health!
