Likely more injury than simple strain. Perhaps facet arthropathy, sacroiliac dysfunction, or even damaged disc. Urge you to have your doctor examine you and suggest appropriate testing, and therapeutic interventions

Regular exercise will help. Raising core body temperature through exercise will strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Any exercise, walking, running cycling, treadmill, elliptical are all equally useful. Wish you good health!
