A member asked:

In athlete's heart, would an enhanced ejection fraction (80%+) and fractional shortening (50%+) at rest be important? what could it suggest? (assuming all structural, systolic and diastolic function parameters are within normal limits for an athlete?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

My understanding is that contrast enhanced echocardiography is used to corroborate the ejection fraction on routine echocardiography. If your EF is over 75% concern would be presence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which should show up in an echocardiogram. Fractional shortening of 50% indicates good myocardial contraction. Apparently your echo didn't show any structural heart disease. Is EKG ok?
