There are many conditions which can cause the mentioned scenario and they are all serious medical conditions. Some conditions may be transitory whereas others may represent a progressive, neurologic, degenerative condition. He should be immediately evaluated by an appropriately trained health care provider.

Agree that most likely cause of "sudden" memory loss maybe due to transient global amnesia or a stroke. The former is indeed short-term but effects of the latter will persist and can provide future further disability. A new medication causing intense anti-cholinergic adverse effects could also be considered, as well as toxin exposure. See your local doctor.
