Most estimates of due dates assume that the pregnancy is normal and will last 40 weeks. These are estimates worked out from many years of experience and millions of births

It is an outdated convention. The full 40 week term is considered to start on the first day of a woman’s last menstrual period (this is a tangible date which is presumably two weeks prior to ovulation and conception). If you are “5 weeks” pregnant, the embryo was conceived 3 weeks ago.
