I think there is a case or 2 worldwide of people who survived rabies but were so devastated they probably wish they had not. Post exposure prophylaxis initiated as soon as possible is the standard of treatment & quite effective. Vets or animal handlers often take the rabies vaccine before exposure with boosters when needed because of their exposur3e risk. It is the same vaccine for exposed folks

If bitten by a rabid animal, or there is suspicion of being bitten by a bat in one's bedroom, it is best to notify your local emergency room and seek attention so that vaccine can be administered. This is a very successful therapy early on. If delayed, the risk of death increases.

If you are bitten by a wild animal or one whose rabies vaccination status is unknown IMMEDIATELY go to an ER or physician to receive the vaccine. Treatment is highly effective and successful - rabies is nearly universally fatal if untreated.
