Antibiotics require prescriptions from a licensed provider. At least 1/2 of sore throats in kids are self healing viruses which do not need antibiotics. Only confirmation with a quick-test (10 min) in the office can decide if it needs treatment.

In the US, diagnosing and treating strep throat is not a Do-It-Yourself thing. Inflamed tonsils and sore throats are common among people with not only strep throat, but also with varieties of the common cold, the flu, viral infections such as EBV and oral herpes. Even COVID-19 causes cold symptoms and throat symptoms. A rapid throat swab helps diagnosis. If needed, amoxicillin is by prescription.
