Progestin or progesterone oral medications are given generally over 5-10 days in amounts of 100-200 mg for women who have skipped menstruation. In early pregnancy, a dose of 50 mg. might be prescribed for spotting or light bleeding at 6-8 weeks of pregnancy for inadquate progesterone production by the placenta , to help prevent miscarriage.
