A stroke occurs when a specific area of the brain is deprived of blood flow (and therefore nutrients and oxygen) because of a small blood clot somewhere in the vascular area. Recovery depends on how long the area of the brain was without oxygen, how large the clot was, the specific area involved (certain areas are more fragile). Talk to the persons Dr to get a better picture of what is involved.

Nice description of mechanism of stroke. Now following event, do best by preventing the next, and rehabilitating using speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. Process will take 3-4 months to reach maximal benefits.

Recovery from stroke depends on 1) the location and 2) size of the stroke, and the 3) age and overall health of the sufferer. Everyone is different. It is impossible to say anything specific with direct knowledge of the patient. It's also impossible to predict anyone's outcome with any certainty. The person to ask is someone who knows the patient and the case personally.
