It partly depends on HSV type. If the partner with genital herpes has HSV2, the risk is higher than for HSV1, but but still quite low: with no visible outbreak, the risk averages once for every 1,000 vaginal sex events. Suppressive medication (valacyclovir or acyclovir) reduces that risk by 50-70%, dropping the risk to 1 in 2,000-3,000. It's still a good idea to use condoms, however!
