The pain location is too high for acid reflux (GERD); people have GERD usually complain of heartburn or retrosternal pain rather than upper back pain. You can try PPI over the counter such as Prilosec, Omeprazole or Nexium for a couple days as a trial. If pain is relieved you may have atypical case of GERD; if not improved or it gets worse, you should see your doctor or a GI specialist.
