The most common cause of unanticipated bleeding while taking low dose oral bcp's is not taking the active pills within the hour of the prior day's active pill. Breakthrough bleeding is not a "real period" (i.e., not post ovulatory), and occurs when the prior day's bcp hormones are exhausted. If punctuality is preserved, the bcp bleeding will take place during the placebo pill seven days.
