It is difficult to avoid contamination of a urine specimen by menstrual blood still present at the vaginal orifice unless scrupulous attention is given to obtain a "clean catch" specimen. Microscopic red cells can easily cause a "+3" presence in such a specimen, without any of the red cells originating in the bladder, but repeat the U/A and make sure the urethra is free of blood.
