Consider the consequences. The A1c is a measure of ~3 months of blood sugar activity. An 8.1 is bad. Your bodies cells are healthiest when BS remains between 70-120, Higher levels injure cells. With an 8.1 she is looking at vision loss, kidney damage and other long term problems. If she is okay with going blind and living on a kidney machine she can avoid treatment. It happens slowly but it happens

Agree with Dr. Ferguson. It is imperative to keep A1c below 7, to avoid complications of diabetes. You mother can help her cause by losing weight, if she is even mildly overweight. Consulting a nutritionist may be helpful in modifying her diet. It is possible that the medication, diet change and weight loss could obviate the need for insulin. Wish you and your mother good health!

Your Mom is walking for exercise, but a major problem with lack of diabetic control is peripheral neuropathy, which can cause numbness and weakness. If she injures a foot, this could become infected leading to amputation. This, of course in addition to loss of vision and kidney failure. She needs to reconsider all of this.
