The entrance to the stomach is physically located just behind and below the heart. Vomiting or coughing hard can pressure the area and sometimes irritation from the stomach contents (acid) has resulted in a painful site. A common term "heartburn" is often applied to this symptom. It lasts until it heals, which can be faster if you avoid caffeine/nicotine or laying down after eating.
