Once acquired as an infection the primary stage clears within ~2 years. It then goes dormant, which is a stage where it is not contagious. It may be gone but can remain for life. The cancer associated strains can trigger changes months/years/decades later or never. Regular pap smears monitor suspicious activity. You would otherwise never know the virus remained.
