The main cause of vaginal irritation and redness is yeast infection (thrush). If there are also blisters or open sores, herpes it the main concern. Yeast doesn't cause much discharge; other STDs do, including herpes. If your doctor suspects yeast, it's reasonable to try treating it, such as a vaginal "azole" product (miconazole, clotrimazole, and several others). Otherwise follow doc's advice.
