This might be trauma, i.e. minor injury, perhaps now with an infection. However, it also could be herpes, especially if your partner has had oral herpes (cold sores). See a doctor ASAP: if herpes, the sooner the better for accurate diagnosis and to start effective treatment. Good luck.
