A member asked:

Can just one tonsil be removed and if so what are the effects of removing one tonsil?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Why you ask?: Tonsillctomy is an operation done mostly in children, who have very large tonsils which are causing obstruction to the airway. It is a procedure which can be and should be avoided, when possible, as tonsils serve as a source of healthy immunity. Removing one tonsil would be unusual, and done only if it is much more enlarged compared to the opposite side. That would imply some unusual pathology.
