COVID: Anyone can get Covid 19, even young children. Your son may have it and I would encourage you to get him the Covid tests his doctor recommends. He also could have a cold or the flu but it is best to know.

Yes, get tested: It is important that exactly people like him get tested, so that we can learn of people with just minor "cold symptoms " like his may actually have a mild case of Covid19. It also let's you know whether you need to keep him in a full quarantine. You are absolutely correct that it may be just a cold, but combine the fact you were exposed with mild symptoms-that equals get tested!
