My 9 year old son has a very sore throat. had fever last night but not anymore. just a sore throat. must he see a doctor?

Must or should: At that age many sore throats are self healing viruses. Some will be strep A infections that can seem to get better over time. However, untreated strep A can lead to Rheumatic Fever, heart/brain & kidney problems weeks later. It doesn't happen in every case but it may. I would contact the kids doc for guidance.

Temperature: Usually Strep throat infection is associated with a very sore throat, fever and difficulty swallowing. If he is febrile, please discuss testing with your Pediatrician. Keep him well hydrated with cool soothing liquids.

Yes, he should: He should see a doctor even though most sore throats are viral. It is important to test for strep as that needs to be treated with an antibiotic. It is also good to know the diagnosis for other family members' sake. Meanwhile, have him drink plenty of fluids, rest, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for the pain/if the fever returns.
