Testing for COVID-19: You and your boyfriend can quarantine separately for 14 days so that you do not infect anyone. If tested 5 days post exposure, chance of false negative for most R-PCR is around 5 percent. Test can be negative 38 percent even on the day symptoms start. Self quarantine for 14 days is the best strategy. Hope it helps.

Testing: I used to recommend waiting about 5 days in people who were exposed but had no symptoms, but to facilitate contact tracing, I now recommend getting tested right away. I feel that you and he should quarantine for 14 days starting with his close exposure a week ago even if tests come back negative.
