SEE DOCTOR AGAIN: You may need an x ray. When the injury has so much swelling it can be hard to tell if it is a sprain or a small break. I would see your doctor and say it is not improving.

Foot pain: No it is not normal for the foot to feel numb even after 5 days after a sprain. Not sure if they did an xray at the ER to rule out a fracture. Would recommend seeing a podiatrist (foot doctor ) for further assessment. Rest, ice and anti-inflammatories to help with the pain and swelling.

?nerve injury: Trauma to ankle cannot only affect the joint but could injure nearby nerves. Numbness and/or weakness of the foot might implicate trauma to the peroneal nerve, but as mentioned previously, could consider posterior tibial, even sural nerves. Best to have followup ASAP for a thorough exam.
