Activity, analgesics: Depending on your age, arthritis type, and other conditions, there are many options. For common osteo-("old age") arthritis, it is important to maintain as much activity as possible. Otc pain relief (nsaids, acetaminophen), joint injections, physical therapy, and eventual joint replacement may all be options. There is rarely any role for narcotics, and utility of x-rays is usually limited.

Correct diagnosis: There are many types of arthritis (over 300) and the most important step is to make the correct arthritis diagnosis. After the diagnosis then one can individualize and develop therapy along the lines of exercise, weight control and a variety of diffferent types of medications. Some medications are taken by mouth, others need to be injected and some are given intravenously. Diagnosis is #1.

Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis but i agree that the specific diagnosis is the most important consideration for specific treatment.
