Pressure changes: in April 2015, researchers from the University of Alberta published a paper based on MRI imaging of finger joints being cracked saying that the popping sound is caused by the formation of air bubbles that form in the fluid that surrounds our joints - called synovial fluid. They found significant changes in synovial fluid pressure before and after the "popping"
