A member asked:

Is a vq scan close to as accurate as ct scan at ruling out pe? what if the pe has been present for a while and its not a massive pe? what are the chances it would be overlooked or missed? can this be done in the er?

Either/CT usually: Either diagnostic test may be used to determine if there is a PE. If the patient can not tolerate iv contrast, no CT available, concerns about radiation, a VQ is a good first step in the work up.
