A member asked:

Good evening doctors! my eye dr wants fta abs test, ppd test, esr vdrl, carotid doppler ekg esr. could you please explain what these tests are for? aren't ekg and carotid doppler for the heart? what do they have to do with the eyes?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Tests: EKG is a heart test. Carotid ultrasound checks for blockages in the carotid arteries. FTA-ABS and VDRL test for current or old syphilis infection. PPD skin test is a test for current or old tuberculosis. ESR tests for the presence of inflammation in the body. I surmise that the ophthalmologist found presence of inflammation in your eyes and is looking for evidence of vascular disease elsewhere
