VSD: I have had a few patients with a ventricular septal defect and haven't seen a familial pattern, but this defect, like other congenital heart defects, can be genetic. Of course, VSD's can be corrected and the patients generally do well. Small defects may close on their own. A genetic counselor can give you more information.
