A member asked:

I while ago i had an infection under my toenail. i treated it with a over the counter nail treatment you brush on. just as the left side of the nail grew out the right side got all bruised and swollen (not sure why) so i started treating that side. its not growing quite right, last night it swelled again. i am not sure if i should see a specialist or primary doctor? do i need a referral? trying to save on all the doctor bills where ever possible. i am having an issue with my big toe/toenail?

Need to examine: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. Depending on the depth of the infection, it may require for the nail to be removed or it may require systemic antibiotics. It would be prudent to see your doctor, or a podiatrist. Wish you good health!

See your physician: Nail infections could be caused by numerous organisms. If it is fungal, the best treatment is actually an oral anti-fungal. If it is bacterial, you may need antibiotics. If it is not growing right, you also have to worry about cancers too. A visit to your doctor will likely be able to give you an accurate diagnosis, treatment, and reassurance that it isn't something more serious.
