A member asked:

I did down syndrome test and it came out as intermediate risk. what does it mean?

Basics: There are screening tests like ultrasound that are cheaper & easier than definitive tests but are used to select out those subgroup that would benefit from more expensive conclusive tests. Intermediate means you are more at risk than the average person your age/status. You should discuss what this means with the OB. Some would want to know or sure once the issue comes up..

Elevated risk : It is very likely that you underwent screening test for Down syndrome (mostly blood test) and you were found in intermediate risk group. Your obstetrician is likely to offer "integrated test" which offers higher detection rate. If you are found to be in high risk group, chorionic sampling or amniocentesis will be necessary to confirm the suspicion.
