Various reasons: Pain as you describe in one eye can be due to sinus or orbital inflammation. If it is associated with decreased vision it can also be of optic nerve origin. If you have had this off and on over the course of years and there are long periods when you are pain-free, it is most likely of sinus origin and needs no investigation. If it is new and does not go away, you need to see an MD.

Many causes: There can be many reasons for this type of pain. Anything from Dry eyes, to Inflammation in your eye or sinuses can cause pain with eye movement. A very serious disease called optic neuritis can cause this pain as well, so I highly recommend you see an ophthalmologist to find the cause.
