Basics: You build muscle by straining/injuring individual fibers that recover from the injury by increasing the fiber size & amount. You likely tore an unusual amount of fibers marked by pain. If you take a few days off the pain should fade. You will need to gradually work back up to prior workout intensity. Your doc can confirm this on exam.
