Basics: These are usually a low grade infection of the hair follicles due to invasion by a form of staph germ. You often carry these in your nasal passages where the moisture & mucus feeds them. Touching the area seeds it with the germs. Sometimes placing a small amount of antibiotic ointment at you nasal opening along with bathing in bathwater to which a cup of bleach is added will end this.
