Short duration: Lactose intolerance is usually caused by a deficiency of an enzyme in the body called lactase. Consuming lactose, symptoms can include abdominal cramps, bloating, and diarrhea. These typically pass in a matter of hours or a day. Do not give bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol, Kaopectate) or loperamide (Imodium). Augment liquid intake with electrolytes and feed Bananas, rice, apples, toast.
