A member asked:

Can a hard punch to side or back of head blind an eye permanent? i quit prison as a correctional officer due to fear of losing my good eye i did wear safety glasses but still had to turn my back on inmates for count .

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably not: A severe blow to the head may rarely cause a retinal tear, leading to a possible retinal detachment. The likelihood of this happening is very low, unless you have lattice degeneration of the retina or are very nearsighted. A blow to the eye directly, of course, can cause an eye injury with resulting loss of vision.
