A member asked:

Can i take my newborn child to a doctor for a six weeks checkup as stated on clinic note/card? also is it normal for a doctor to just look at the child and just advise all is fine then dispense meds for this child without checking her properly?

Not at my office: I consider this visit very important and have the kid undressed & examine everything. To do less increases the chance you miss important issues. It is true a trained doc can pick up major things from several feet away, but I consider that poor practice.

Keep 6 wk appt: It is important to keep your baby's well appointments. If he/she did not have a 4 wk appt and/or the doctor had a concern at that visit and asked you to come in at 6wks, please do so.The infant should have a full exam, unclothed to be sure everything is normal. There may be times when the 6 wk visit is just a weight check follow-up from the 4wk and if the weight is good, the doctor may not do an exam.
