Recently got some used shirts from a reseller. of course i washed them before first wear if i have a detergent allergy. should my washing have knocked out any potential reactive residue from old detergents?

Depends: If you wash then rinse several times it should remove residual soaps from the fabric. It can take several rinse cycles to be effective enough for a truly allergic persons.
