Labs Rarely Help: Unfortunately, it's very rare that a laboratory study can explain the cause of hypertension (high blood pressure). The vast majority of cases are what we call "primary" hypertension, which is a simple way to say "we don't really know why." most people should start with restriction of salt in their diet. If your resting blood pressure is still >140mmhg (top number, systolic), meds are advised.
