Do people who recover from covid-19 gain immunity to the novel coronavirus?

We HOPE so.: Initially assumptions were made that there would be at least some protective value against future infections if one had been infected. However, many countries have now reported cases where someone tested positive, recovered, tested negative- only to again become ill and test positive again. This is not happening a lot but it still raises the question.
