Gastric problem: Bentyl is dicyclomine and this is an anticholinergic. Acetyl choline is the main chemical that stimulates the GI smooth muscle and this medication blocks it. This relaxes the smooth muscle which lines the bowel. Levsin is hyoscyamine and this has an atropine or anticholinergic effect too . Fairly similar efficacy for either medication. Some respond better to one or the other.

Bentyl: You may have rapid gastric emptying or hyperactive gastrocolic reflex rather than the full dumping syndrome where fluctuations in blood sugar cause significant symptoms. I have found that taking bentyl, 10 or 20 mgs 1 hour before the meal is effective in suppressing an hyperactive gastrocolic reflex and see no harm in long-term use. Dry mouth is the common side effect. ? See gastroenterologist
