Precordial impulse: When the heart beats, the movement of the left large chamber (ie, left ventricle) can be seen and felt along the chest wall. This point of maximum motion or impulse occurs at the heart apex, which is normally located leftward of midline in the space between the 5th and 6th ribs. Absent symptoms, a visible precordial impulse is normal, especially in children and thin adults.
