Acute Bronchitis: Many conditions can cause persistent cough. Acute bronchitis, or "chest cold," can cause cough (+/- phlegm) along with back pain, body aches, chills, fever, runny nose and congestion. Acute bronchitis is from inflammation of the bronchi--the large breathing tubes that carry air from the windpipe to the lungs--most commonly caused by a virus. It will usually go away on its own within 1 to 2 weeks.
