Excess gas: Nursing or bottle fed babies can swallow a great deal of air as they feed. Burping helps to eliminate some of the gas, but the rest is expelled down the line as flatus (farts) It is very typical to pass gas when passing stool for a person of any age. (including babies) The abdominal pressure that forces out the stool also forces out the gas.
