Many things: Many things can cause swollen ankles. Specifically problems involving the heart, liver or kidneys. Issues with any of these organs can result in pressure changes or salt retention/imbalances which can lead to accumulation of excess fluid in the lower legs. Your dr can do a full workup for your swollen ankles including exam, lab tests, etc and address any underlying conditions.
