Depending on local issues (such as how much folate is added to foods) the recommended dose for women's folate supplements are about 400 mcg/day for those who might become pregnant, 400-600 mcg/day for those already pregnant, and 4-5 mg/day (10 times more) for women at high risk for getting a baby with a neural tube birth defect.
