A member asked:

Should me and my husband both be taking folic acid 1mg each if trying to conceive?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not to help conceive: Extra folic acid does not help people conceive. Depending on local issues (such as how much folate is added to foods) the recommended dose for women's folate supplements are about 400 mcg/day for those who might become pregnant, 400-600 mcg/day for those already pregnant, and 4-5 mg/day (10 times more) for women at high risk for getting a baby with a neural tube birth defect.
