I am consulting for my dad who is visiting me from overseas but cannot return due to the c-19 situation. he has had hoarseness for several months and recently became worse. he is coughing sometimes as well. can you please advise what to do or to take?

May need Dr eval: If he is a smoker he probably should be evaluated by a Dr for persistent hoarseness. If not a smoker there is less risk of cancers. If any congestion or post nasal drainage present an antihistamine an help (loratidine, cetirizine, etc) . If any acid reflux symptoms famitidine can help. If he has been talking or singing a lot, voice rest as much as possible for 72 hours can help

Eval: Actually, agree with earlier response that this should be evaluated to determine cause. There are quite a few different possible causes - some minor and some more serious.
