A 57-year-old female asked:
5th uti (ecoli) in 7 months. had cysto, ultra & kub last uti 2.5 months ago. taking d-mannose and azo cranberry pills. started burning today, high wbc in urine and rbcs. (have strips) starting macrodantin 50mg bid for 5 days. why do i keep getting?

Menopause: probably 50% of women carry bacteria in their urine without pathology. Test strips are inaccurate. Check your urine when asymptomatic to see if you test positive. Sometimes a small amount of estrogen creme around the urethra will "plump up" the surrounding tissues and close the urethra. menopause atrophies vaginal tissue, and the urethra can become less protected. Post coital UTI's are common
