A member asked:

I had some asparagus in the fridge for about 2 weeks the ends where soft i cut them off and steamed/boiled them can asparagus thats old cause food poisoning?

No: Food poisoning is triggered by toxins formed in food by bacteria. Boiling/steaming any food will destroy any such germs or the related toxin. The material may taste bad from the delay in use, but food poisoning would not be the reason.

Agree with Dr. F: The one exception would be preformed staphylococcal toxin that is not destroyed by cooking. This toxin acts in a few hours and if you did not have any symptoms, you should be fine. Wish you good health!
